Ultimate Frisbee is played on a field by 2 opposing teams. When the game starts, the teams are positioned on the opposite ends. A team will be designated to throw the flying disc as far as possible and the other team will try to catch it. When the opposing team is able to catch the Frisbee, they can advance 1 or 2 steps.

Once a player catches the Frisbee, he or she should stay in place and pass the flying disc to another player; but if the disc is dropped, it will be given to the competing team. Achieving Altitude and Distance when Playing Frisbee

Children can definitely throw Frisbees but did you know that if you want to become a good player in Frisbee, you must be able to achieve altitude and distance when tossing the flying disc? It’s really more fun to play any type of Frisbee game if the disc flies higher and farther. If you want to throw the disc farther and higher, you need to know some basics.

Have you checked your stance lately? When playing Frisbee, you should have secure footing just like when you’re playing basketball, baseball, or football. With regular and constant practice, you will be more proficient in handling or throwing the flying disc. Try to throw the disc in various stances and determine which works best for you.

When doing the basic throw, put your thumb atop the Frisbee while the index finger is along the disc’s ridge. Your other fingers should be curled under the disc’s ridge. The ‘true pointer’ should be the index finger. The arms should move like an arc before the throw is made and you will only let go of the disc when the index finger is already pointing to the other player who will receive the disc.

When you’re about to let go of the Frisbee, you must do it with a ‘snap’ and it should be done when your hand is already chest high (preferably when it is angled to the ground. When there is low wind, this movement can generate a maximum distance throw; provided you released the disc good at a horizontal angle.

If you’re hoping to achieve more height, or probably more distance, try to throw the Frisbee from the underhand position. Grip the flying disc properly at your side and bring the disc up with an arc motion. Let the disc go when it is already in a horizontal position.

The underhand throw can be executed in various angles. You can try releasing the Frisbee at different angles until you find the move that works for you best. It would even be possible to throw the disc and have it come back to you, and it is called boomerang style. You can use this style if you’re playing alone.

These are some ways to achieve altitude and distance. If you’re tired of the regular Frisbee game, you can do these things to add some spice in your games.

Frisbee is not new and according to some researches, it was first conceptualized in the 1800s. Since the first time it was introduced, Frisbee has undergone a lot of changes and modifications. Now, it is already played in different types of games and each game has its own rules and playing techniques. The best players practiced for long hours and days in order to learn the moves. There is one Frisbee game which allows players to create or develop their own unique moves and throws and it serves as the basis for identifying the winner.

Try the throwing techniques mentioned earlier so that you can at least see how far your throw goes. With constant practice, you will be able to see your development. You can’t expect to get the throws at one time and it could take several tries before you can get it.

Practice hard and practice good; this is the key to achieving altitude and distance when throwing the Frisbee.

Where the Name Frisbee Came From

A name can tell quite a lot about a certain thing or an individual. Even Frisbee has its own history and inventor. Because of the inventor, this exciting recreation became known all over the world. Quite often, the inventor or creator of a thing is the main target of debates. You see, there are occasions when the source of a certain thing is not known due to lack of evidence but in the case of Frisbee, its inventors were clearly identified.

The name ‘Frisbee’ got its name from Frisbie Baking Company. The company was located at Bridgeport Connecticut and they made excellent pies for the universities found in New England. Based on some sources, the students in the colleges played with the empty tins of the pies. It served as a form of game or sport for them and so they were the primary players of Frisbee.

Another source claimed the name ‘Frisbee’ was derived from Elihu Frisbie who was an undergraduate student in Yale. Elihu used to fling tray collections from the chapel to the school grounds.

All these things happened in the 1820’s and ‘Frisbee’ was simply coined by the college students. Until now, Frisbee is still considered to have been arising from the pie business and the name of the undergrad student. Both the student and pie company are trying to claim the Frisbee’s origin.

Eventually, the pie tins have been replaced by plastic material Frisbee versions which are designed by Warren Franscioni and Walter Frederick Morrison. The plastic Frisbees are far better than the pie tins due to the fact that it can fly further and more accurately. However, Franscioni and Morrison called it ‘Pluto-platter’ and it was a sure hit throughout their time since many people were quite interested in the UFOs. Since the basic design was saleable and hit the market by storm, it was patented and christened ‘Morrison Slope’.

Morrison later on sold the design to Wham-O. This was another company that manufactured hula hoops. The production started in 1957. The sales were extraordinary but after several years, Pluto-platter’s sales slowed down. Wham-O planned to restore the toy into the market and that was also the time when they discovered the story of the Frisbee. Wham-O borrowed the name and re-introduced Frisbee but this time, not as a toy but as a sport.

University students also called playing Frisbee as ‘frisbie-ing’ and now it’s already called Ultimate Frisbee which is very much similar to football.

So, are you still wanting to know where the name ‘Frisbee’ came from? One can not exactly tell where Frisbee was taken from but for now, all the individuals and firms mentioned earlier are all responsible for the development of Frisbee. The recreation sport would not be popular in the modern times without their contributed efforts. To sum all of it up, the name ‘Frisbee’ came from Frisbie Baking Company, Elihu Frisbie, the college students who played with the pie tins and created the word ‘frisbei-ing’, Warren Franscioni, Walter Frederick Morrison, and Wham-O.

If one of them is missing, Frisbee would not be identified as a recreational sport now. Thanks to these individuals and manufacturers, people today can play a very exciting and fun sport like Frisbee. Buy your Frisbee now and enjoy playing it with the family and friends. It is surely a fun way to keep yourself fit and to use your extra energy.

The Physics behind Frisbee

Have you ever wondered how a Frisbee flies? The answer to that question is quite simple – it is completely related to Physics. The forward flight of the Frisbee is due to the air that drives at the leading edge of the disc. The air flow stays over and under the flying disc.

With the edge of the disc being tipped up, much of the air is deflected downward, so when it pushes downward, the air is again pushed up and over the disc.. This force which enables the Frisbee to fly on air is known as aerodynamic lift. You can compare the flow of the air to the flow of fluids. This air tends to follow curve surfaces. The design of the Frisbee is carefully thought out. Due to the bend on the Frisbee, air is easily sucked upwards and downwards thereby making the disc stay floating despite of the pull of gravity. Another good way to describe a Frisbee in flight will be the so called ‘Bernoulli Effect’.

As a Frisbee gamer, you've got to be conscious that you are not able to make a Frisbee fly when it is upside-down. The disc’s turning is also crucial. For instance, when a game player tosses the Frisbee verticaly, it definitely will result in a poor flight. The Frisbee will just quiver and tumble like that of a falling leaf; this is because the aerodynamic force isn’t ideally centered. Because of the Frisbee’s angular momentum, it would likely stay on a certain orientation. The flight of the disc is frequently affected by the aerodynamic twists and torques.

Due to the disc’s innovative design, the greatest lift is perfectly placed at the toy’s middle. The angular momentum of the disc is also optimized due to its thicker edges. The disc also has top ridges and it's not for any design purpose. The ridges introduce microscopic air turbulence above the disc’s label. Because of the turbulence, the disc can fly farther and longer on the air.

A lot of people are confused with the physics behind the Frisbee and so they would just rather toss and catch a Frisbee instead of think about how a toy works. It is really quite amazing that the Frisbee started as an empty pie tin and at present, it’s flight can certainly only be explained by physics.

If someone asks you in what ways the disc flies, you have now got an idea. If you still can not comprehend the concept of aerodynamics, you can just answer that the Frisbee flies because of its innovative and sophisticated design; that way, you won’t have to run down the details. Still, the aerodynamic concept and the Bernoulli Effect are not really difficult to understand. If you take time to read and comprehend, you will immediately understand how the toy works.

From just a simple toy, the Frisbee is now being played as a sport. In fact, there's many types of Frisbee games today which includes Ultimate Frisbee, Flutter Guts, Friskee, Dodge Frisbee, Disc Golf, and a lot more. Because of the disc’s ingenious construction, it has evolved from being a simple toy to very exciting sports.

Now that you know physics behind the flight of a Frisbee, you’ll no longer ponder how it is able to endure the gravity and stay in the air for a long period. Get your very own Frisbee now and play together with someone you know and even other family members. You will be able to play in your own yard or even at the park.

Catching the Frisbee

Many people love to play Frisbee especially on the beach and in other open spaces. Some individuals also tend to create or develop their own moves so that they can receive added praise from spectators. Very few individuals develop good skills in Frisbee because most players simply want to have fun and they often think that learning to throw and catch the Frisbee is enough in order to play the game.

Have you ever tried catching the Frisbee between the knees or legs while you’re on the ground? How about catching it while you’re on air? If you want to learn to do these things, check out these cool steps so that you can be guided.

Firstly, you need to judge or estimate where the flying disc or Frisbee will land. See how the other player throws the disc and make an estimate. If you’ve been playing Frisbee for a very long time, this task will be very easy for you.

Once you’ve estimated where the Frisbee will land, go to that exact spot. Make sure that the Frisbee will land on your shins when you’re standing still and upright. If you’re a bit far from the spot, you can run or jog so that you can get there on time.

When you finally reach the spot, you need to spread both of your legs. After that, bend the knees and do a crouching position. You have to ensure that your fingers can touch the ground from the crouching position.

Drop your arms to your back. Bend the catching arm’s elbow around the thigh and try to extend your hands between the legs. The palms should face up and the thumb should also be pointing up. Keep your eyes on the flying disc and catch it. To catch the flying disc, pinch the thumb to the fingers. That’s how you can catch the disc between the legs. Other players will surely make a fuss over your move.

Catching the flying disc on air is also a great stunt that you can try. Again, you will need to estimate or judge where the Frisbee will land. After that, you need to go to the spot there the disc will land. Jumping to catch the disc is very important and it should be properly timed. You have to ensure that once you jump, the disc will be there in front of you. Drop both your arms behind the body. Follow the same procedures mentioned earlier. Catching the disc on air between the legs is definitely a spectacular move. Well, this is not to show off your talent or move but it’s a way of making the game more interesting and fun.

The second stunt is a bit difficult so you need to catch a floating disc at first. Once you’ve mastered it, you can already try catching discs which are darting towards you. Do not attempt to engage in a strenuous activity like Frisbee is you have any health conditions. If you’re suffering from any ailment, you need to consult your physician before you start playing Frisbee.

Frisbee is a physical activity and it uses up a lot of energy. You need to be prepared for this game because it is a very active sport or game. Try the stunts or moves mentioned above and if you master them, other players will surely follow.

Who Invented Frisbee?

Who invented the Frisbee? Many inventions only have one or two creators but in the instance of Frisbee, there are multiple claims or stories underlying its creation. Today’s Frisbee evolved from ’s pie tins. Many say that university students in New England had fun with the unused pie tins by flinging and catching it. For a more suitable history of Frisbee, here are some of the highlights.

1820 – There was an undergrad Yale student named Elihu Frisbie who tinkered with tray collections by flinging them around the campus. According to some people, ‘Frisbee’ was coined from Elihu’s last name; the ‘ie’ of Frisbie was modified to ‘ee’ and became Frisbee. Even though this was the most agreed claim, still it met a lot of disapproval.

1871-1958 – as mentioned earlier, Frisbee seemed to be considered to have came from . The name of this company had been engraved on the pie tins they dropped off at the grounds of New England. Frisbee is then derived from the name of the pie business. Scores university students cherished the pies and once they consume the pies, they practice with the used tins by hurling and catching them. A lot of students found the overall game enormously funny and interesting and so it grew to become very popular in lots of campuses in New England.

1948 – 2 of the fans of the ‘pie tins’ made a plastic material version and they referred to it Pluto-platter. It was distributed as a toy in the market and it acquired a lot of sales since UFOs were also quite fashionable that time. The individuals responsible for making the plastic material variety of the Frisbee were Warren Franscioni and Walter Frederick Morrison. Though, Franscioni quit and it was only Morrison who went after the plan. Several people thought that the Pluto-platter was far enhanced than the pie tins and so they patronized it. Besides, the new toy flew higher than the pie tins and it exhibited speed and accuracy. Soon, Morrison had his toy patented and named it the ‘Morrison Slope’.

1955 – A hula hoop manufacturer, Wham-O, convinced Morrison to sell his design and rights to the toy.

1957 – By this year, Wham-O started to produce the Pluto-platter

1958 – The pie company, Frisbie Baking Company, closed or shut down; in the same year, Morrison was able to collect millions of dollars for his design

1964 – The sales of the Pluto-platter went down and so Wham-O decided to rename it and then re-introduce it to the market as a new toy. The company found out about the story of the Frisbee and so they decided to introduce the toy as a new sports game and called it ‘frisbei-ing’. The players of the game called it Frisbee.

At present, there are already different many kinds of Frisbee and Ultimate Frisbee is just one of them. Ultimate Frisbee came from ‘frisbei-ing’.

So you see, Frisbee has gone through a lot of changes and modifications. There is no specific inventor of the game or sport because it was generated through the joint efforts of a mixture of individuals and companies. The years 1820 to 1964 are quite significant because it is within these years when Frisbee was being conceptualized.

Frisbee is a very exciting game and it helps to know who created or invented it. The game would not exist today if one of the companies or individuals is missing. Thanks to their joint efforts, people today have a healthy and challenging sport to play.

The History of Frisbee

People always seem to remember their firsts – first word spoken, first step, tooth, love, and many other firsts. This is also true with the many inventions of man. If you are interested in Frisbee, then you are most likely interested in its history. Who created Frisbee? When was it first played and by whom?

The Frisbee that many people know nowadays wasn't the very same Frisbee that was thrown and enjoyed in years past. The design is incredibly ingenius and it started not as a plastic material toy. Back then, it was believed that students played Frisbee by using pie tins. The design of the Frisbee evolved through the many years until it finally developed with the plastic design.

Way back then, Frisbee has a different spelling but it seemed to be pronounced the same way. It was spelled Frisbie and it was taken from a company name and a individual's name. The Frisbie Baking Company was a especially popular pie-producing business that delivered to most of the school and university campuses in New England. The pie company operated from 1871 to 1958 and the pies were put in pie tins with the name of the company at the bottom of the tin.

Given that the students really loved their pies, many were eating it and so they were being left with tons of pie tins. The students were able to come up with a pastime they often called ‘frisbie-ing’ and the pie tins were in turn called ‘frisbie’. In one of the campuses, there was as well a student called Elihu Frisbie which competed with tray assortments (using it similar to Frisbee) on the school property. Some say that Frisbee was already originated from his surname.

Walter Frederick Morrison completed a novel version of the pie tins and made a plastic Frisbee yet he didn't call it by the name originated by the college students. In its place, he named it Pluto-platter mainly because during that time, UFOs were very accepted and intriguing. Certainly, his Pluto-platter was a certain hit and a lot of people favored it.
